Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Fraser Optics and what is the clear advantage?

Fraser Optics is a U.S. manufacturer of hand-held gyro-stabilized optical products.  These high-powered, world-class optics have been in use by US and foreign militaries for more than 40 years. Battle-proven, Fraser Optics’ products are tested to operate in the most extreme conditions. Uniquely engineered with STEDI-EYE® Technology, our optics eliminate motion, enhance clarity, and give a competitive edge to all users.  This Clear Advantage  can now be experienced by all consumers through our newly established Commercial division.

What makes Fraser Optics and its products unique?

Fraser Optics products are engineered using Fraser’s STEDI-EYE® Technology which combines gyro-stabilization with Fraser Optics superior standards to create products unmatched in optical performance. All products are backed by proven performance in military and law enforcement mission-critical operations and have been tested under extreme conditions. They are guaranteed to be reliable, precise, and unmatched in operational performance. Manufactured to MILSPEC standards, all of our products are proudly made in the USA at our facility in Warminster, Pennsylvania.

What is gyro-stabilization?

Gyro-stabilization is based on the principle of conservation of angular momentum. The gyro consists of a motor and a flywheel which, when spinning at full speed, resists changes to its orientation due to the angular momentum of the flywheel. When the unit shakes in one direction, the gyro moves in the opposite direction. Through manipulation of the prisms, gyro-stabilization provides a pure image. The small amount of movement when holding a binocular, called “jitter,” is magnified by the optics, degrading the image.  In a gyro-stabilized binocular the prisms are mounted on a platform (gimbal) that can swivel independently of the rest of the binocular.  A small motor driven gyroscope sits on the platform manipulating the prisms to stabilize the image and retain clarity.

How does STEDI-EYE® Technology improve performance?

Fraser Optics products remove up to 98% of image motion caused by hand tremor and platform vibration, which is essential for use in fast moving situations, or for use in any moving vessel, platform or vehicle. This is especially important offshore, in battle, on patrol, or in an observation situation when hand movement or motion occurs degrading vision. Fraser Optics’ products provide stabilized views on land, sea, and air regardless of environmental conditions.

What is Fraser Optics’ history with the military and why is that important?

Fraser Optics is the only optics company that has more than 40 years of proven performance supplying gyro-stabilized optics to the U.S. military. Fraser Optics’ M-25 has been in use by our troops for more than 15 years and remains in use by the U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force, U.S. Navy and a wide number of International Allies overseas. We continue to work with various US Military labs to demonstrate stabilization of new technologies in new applications and are pleased to now bring these proven technologies to the general public.

Who buys Fraser Optics products and what are they used for?

Our state-of-the-art equipment is used worldwide to conduct long range surveillance on the ground, aboard ships, and from airborne platforms. It is used primarily to detect personnel and vehicle movement, as well as to aid in the identification of targets of interest at long ranges. The gyro-stabilization technology provides superior performance on the move, or in any vehicle or moving platform.

Our Mariner Series is designed for the big-game angler, yachtsman, harbor patrolman or industry professionals whose success depends upon crystal clear stable vision.
